On September 30, 2015, popular content discovery platform Flipora
announced that it was making changes: the company rolled out new
features, a visual redesign, and most importantly, a new name - Flipora
was now Rover. Flipora’s founders explained that they had started their
company with a mission to help people expand their horizons by
connecting them to content that matched their interests, but that they
might not otherwise have discovered. Using a unique machine learning
algorithm, the app now known as Rover effectively learns about a
person’s taste over time and offers content accordingly.
In the
summer of 2015, Flipora raised $1.5 million from a number of prominent
Silicon Valley investors. The founders subsequently took a fresh look at
their vision, and Rover was born. Named after the Mars Curiosity Rover,
the Rover app included new features, a redesigned interface, the
ability to follow celebrities and tastemakers, as well as control over
the home feed. Since rebranding, Rover has continued to refine its
product, always with the mission of connecting people with information.
